Surf Camp Canaries Information
Best travel time
The surf camps are located on three of the Canary Islands - Fuerteventura, Tenerife and Gran Canaria. Due to the consistently mild temperatures, these islands are a popular surfing destination all year round. Advanced surfers should come to one of our surf camps in the Canary Islands from October to March as these months have consistent surfing conditions.
Air & water temperature
Due to the mild climate, the temperature on the Canary Islands is never less than 15°C, even in winter. In the hot summer months it can get up to 28°C. In the months of July, August and September you often feel like you are in the tropics because of the high humidity.
In the Canary Islands, the sea is warmest in the winter months. In December the water temperature can reach up to 24°C.
Wetsuit
Even in winter, a wetsuit with a thickness of 3/2 mm is sufficient. Between August and October you can even surf in board shorts or a neoprene shorty on the Canary Islands. It is best to wear booties on the reef breaks to protect yourself from the sharp volcanic rocks and sea urchins.
Surf spots Fuerteventura
The volcanic island of Fuerteventura is characterized by an extremely fast sloping reef that creates perfect waves for surfing. You will not only find reef breaks, but also beach breaks, which are particularly suitable for learning to surf on Fuerteventura. All year round you have crystal clear water and constant swell on the second largest island, which allows you the perfect surfing holiday. Here is a selection of surf spots:
Esquinzo Beach:
The surf spot Playa de Esquinzo should be visited by advanced surfers. This beach break creates left and right waves in Northwest, West and Southwest swells that work best in low and mid tide.
Playa de Garcey:
Playa de Garcey, also known as The Shipwreck, is a reef break and is suitable for advanced surfers or for spectators. North, Northwest, and Southwest swell can have nice long right and left waves in Playa de Garcey. Falling or Rising Tide is the best time to be there to surf.
Majanicho:
This reef break Majanicho offers the best conditions for beginners and advanced surfers. Great right hand waves come from North, Northwest and Northeast swells and you can surf them at any tide.
Los Lobos:
Los Lobos is one of the best reef breaks in the Canary Islands. With north and northwest swell you can surf nice right waves at low and mid tide. On a good day you can ride waves of 500 m.
Surf spots Tenerife
The highest mountain on Tenerife, the volcano Teide, literally takes the wind out of the sails of the north-east trade winds and also ensures there is no wind on the south-west coast of the island. So it can be a clean surf even in the windy summer months in the south of Tenerife. The following surf spots on Tenerife give you a first choice:
Almaciga:
Almáciga is east of Taganana and can be surfed by both beginners and advanced surfers. This point break creates left and right waves at North, Northwest and Northeast.
Benijos:
Benijos is located in the northern part of Tenerife and can only be reached through a narrow road. This surf spot is a reef rocky break that creates left and right waves and should only be visited by advanced surfers. This surf spot works best with North, Northwest and Northeast swell and powerful waves are created.
El Socorro:
El Socorro can be visited by beginners and advanced surfers. This reef rocky break creates left and right waves in North, Northwest and West swell. It is best to visit this surf spot on Tenerife at low and mid tide.
Playa de las Americas:
For Playa de las Américas you need West, Southwest or South Swell to surf here as a beginner or intermediate surfer. This reef rocky break creates right and left waves and should be visited at mid tide.
La Derecha del Cartel:
La Derecha del Cartel is a great reef break and can also be visited by beginners on small days. This reef rocky break runs at any tide. It's best to visit this surf spot near North or Northwest, because then there are great right waves.
Surf spots in Gran Canaria
Gran Canaria is the third largest of the Canary Islands and is Europe's secret surfing metropolis. Compared to the mountainous surfer island of Fuerteventura, many surf spots on Gran Canaria are not particularly wind-prone, even during the summer trade winds. Due to the enormous mountain massif inland, the trade winds on the north and south coasts are quite reliably blocked. You will always find constant waves in the north. Some surf spots that offer the best services for beginners and advanced surfers are:
La Cicer:
La Cicer is located on the three kilometer long Playa de las Canteras and can be visited by both beginners and advanced surfers. This beach break creates left and right waves and you can visit at any tide. This surf spot works best with North, Northwest and Northeast swell.
El Lloret:
You can visit El Lloret as an advanced surfer. This reef break on the western outskirts of Las Palmas breaks as a point break on a good day and can produce top notch waves. The wave runs steep and fast on North, Northwest and Northeast swells and it's best to be there at low or mid tide.
El Confital:
In El Confital the wave breaks over a reef creating one of the best righthanders in Europe. Attention, the locals only tolerate very good surfers who first have to work out their place in the wave. You should visit this surf spot in Gran Canaria at North, Northwest and West Swell and at Mid and High Tide.
San Felipe:
The surf spot San Felipe can be visited by beginners as well as advanced surfers. You can use this beach break at any tide and you will get nice right and left waves.
Flight arrival
Have you always wanted to go to Hawaii, but don't have the wherewithal? Then hop on a plane and come surf at one of our surf camps in the Canary Islands, because here you will find the Hawaii of Europe. The airport of our surf camps in Fuerteventura is Puerto del Rosario, in Tenerife it is Santa Cruz de Tenerife and in Gran Canaria it is Las Palmas de Gran Canaria. Our surf camps on the Canary Islands are served by the low-cost airline EAYSJET, among others, and you can check in your surfboard as large sports luggage if it does not weigh more than 32 kg. With British Airways you can take your surfboard with you for free within the weight limit (max weight 23 kg and max length 1.9 m). If you fly to the Canary Islands with Swiss Airline, you can take your surfboard with you for €50 if it is no longer than 2m.
Entry
You can easily enter the Canary Islands with your passport or ID card. Both must not have expired for more than one year. The requirements of individual airlines often differ from those of the state and must therefore be obtained from the airline itself.
In the Canary Islands
On Fuerteventura, Tenerife and Gran Canaria it is a good idea to rent a car to explore nearby surf spots and the country. An off-road jeep is the best way to get to remote places. The great thing about a rental car is that you can check out all the surf spots and you also have cheap petrol and diesel prices on the Canary Islands. However, you also have the option of taking the bus or an inexpensive taxi.
More tips
- You should definitely have sunscreen in your luggage, as the sun is incredibly strong here in Africa. We recommend sunscreen with at least SPF 20.
- On the islands you can put your clock forward one hour if you come from Germany, Austria or Switzerland, otherwise: time doesn't matter.
- On the Canary Islands you should get used to the motto slowdown, because the islanders are very relaxed and friendly and don't know the word hectic and stress at all.
- In bars, cafes, restaurants and hotels it is customary to tip 5-10% of the bill. If the service is extremely good, you can of course give more - nobody will complain about it!
- Shops are generally open weekdays from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. and 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. In the summer months of August and September, many smaller shops are already closed in the afternoon.
Here are a few tips to ensure that your surfing holiday on the Canary Islands with Puresurfcamps is a complete success:
Do's:
- Fuerteventura is only 100 km away from Africa. Due to its proximity, the wind often blows Saharan sand onto the island, forming the Parque Natural de Corralejo, one of the most beautiful beaches in Fuerteventura. On Fuerteventura you will not only find kilometers of white sandy beaches, but also unusual black beaches made of volcanic rock. With a boat trip on a pirate ship, a trip on a catamaran or on a sailing boat, you can admire the coast of Fuerteventura from the sea, relax and, with a bit of luck, even see whales or dolphins. In Fuerteventura you should definitely stop by the fishing village of Morro Jable; there are restaurants that serve delicious, fresh fish dishes.
- Tenerife is one of the best places in the world to spot dolphins or whales in their natural environment. You can see pilot whales, pilot whales or bottlenose dolphins in the crystal-clear water up close. If you decide to go on a boat tour, it's important to make sure you choose a reputable company that gives the animals enough space and doesn't disturb or frighten them in their natural environment. You should definitely plan half a day for a trip to the Teide National Park, because of the deep craters and the solidified lava flows, the national park resembles a lunar landscape in some places. Divers and snorkelers agree that Tenerife has one of the most varied underwater worlds in Europe. In the bay of El Puertito you have the opportunity to swim with sea turtles. If you are a night owl, then the numerous clubs, bars and discotheques will tempt you. You can forget everyday life while dancing to hot rhythms.
- In Gran Canaria you should find time for Puerto de Mogán in addition to surfing. This port town is known as Gran Canaria's Venice, because you will find live music and romantic places along the beach promenade. On Sundays there are flea markets near Parque Santa Catalina where you can shop for bargains and souvenirs. Maybe you like FEDAC products, braided bags, blankets and jewelry made according to Canarian craftsmanship. If you have a sweet tooth, you should definitely visit the Dulcería Nublo Tejeda bakery, which is known across the island for its delicious marzipan cake. You can not only experience perfect waves, dune beaches and dreamy villages, but also pure partying on Gran Canaria. The nightlife takes place in Playa del Inglés, in the south of the island. In the Centro Comercial you will find countless bars, pubs and discos. In Las Palmas, for example, you can dance under the stars in the open-air disco "Kahlua".
Don'ts:
- On the Canary Islands, you should not drive after a long night of partying, as you have to pay a high fine with a blood alcohol level of 0.3 per thousand.
- Don't forget, the Canary Islands are in front of Africa and the sun shines quite strongly here. It's easy to forget that when it's windy and you quickly get a bad sunburn. So don't forget to apply lotion and sunscreen!
- For all the more advanced surfers - only venture out onto the reefs alone if you have inquired beforehand. Otherwise it is better to use surf guiding. The guides will point out danger spots and will help you not to make direct acquaintance with the reef while surfing.
Surfing
The Canary Islands
The Canary Islands are a real paradise: blue sea, white dunes - and only a four-hour flight from Germany! The islands are located in the middle of the Atlantic and not only enchant their visitors with an interesting and varied landscape, but also with consistently mild temperatures. The Canary Islands are also interesting because of their volcanic origin and the large number of plants. The endless sandy beaches, the turquoise waters and the wonderful weather are the main features of this surfing destination, which is often called "the Hawaii of Europe". The Canary Islands have this nickname because they have as much shoreline as the Hawaiian Islands. You'll find everything here - from perfect beach breaks and reefs to fast point breaks. And best of all: The Pure Surfcamps are open for you 365 days a year!
