Portugal borders on the Atlantic, which is influential for the climate. The winters on the coasts of Portugal are mild and the summer months are sunny and dry. The warmest months are July and August. But even then it doesn't get too hot, because the refreshing wind from the Atlantic always cools down a bit. In summer it hardly rains in Portugal. The best travel months are therefore from March to November. In spring and autumn it can be below 20°C, but there is not that much going on and the line-ups are emptier. The sea stays at around 20°C until November. Since Portugal is quite south, you still have very long daylight. Even in winter, when it gets dark at home in Germany in the afternoon, you can still enjoy the day in Portugal. Conclusion: The best travel time for a surf trip to Portugal is all year round. :-)
air & water temperature
In the summer months, the air temperatures are between 26°C and 29°C, the water then has a pleasant average of 22°C. In winter, temperatures during the day feel like 22°C. The water reaches its lowest temperatures in January/February. But with the right wetsuit you can surf all year round. In our online shop you can get the perfect wetsuit to travel with you. Wetsuit
On particularly hot days it can happen that you can go surfing in Portugal without a wetsuit. In principle, however, it is advisable to wear a 3/2 mm wetsuit in summer and a 4/3 mm wetsuit in winter, as this not only protects against the cold, but also against sunburn. If you are unsure what you need for a wetsuit, we will be happy to advise you. Ask us all your questions in your non-binding booking request and we will be happy to answer them. You can also rent a neoprene suit from us on site. If you want to have your own wetsuit then the Surf Plus Combo will probably fit the bill!
Algarve
The sun-drenched Algarve has numerous beautiful coastlines and great, long beaches that offer fantastic conditions for surfers.
Praia do Castelejo / Cordoama
If you drive from the Surf Lodge Portugal towards Vila do Bispo and through the town towards the coast, you come to Praia do Castelejo (left) and Praia do Cordoama (right). Praia do Castelejo and Cordoama are a good alternative when other surf spots such as Amado are not running or the waves are too small. The two spots are beach breaks, with waves running left and right.
Praia do Amado
The Praia do Amado is the local beach of our partner surfing school of the Surf Lodge Portugal and the Surf Camp Algarve and at the same time one of the most beautiful beaches in the world. This is where the surf courses of our surf camps in the Algarve take place.
Between red and ocher rocks in the north and slate gray rocks in the south, there are almost always waves. Depending on the sandbanks, there are several lefts and rights. In the surf school right on the beach you can also easily rent surfboards and wetsuits. The Praio do Amado is suitable for beginners to learn to surf as well as for advanced surfers. If the surf spot is too crowded for you in summer, it offers you empty line-ups and waves up to 10ft in winter.
Praia da Arrifana
From the Surflodge Portugal and from the Surfcamp Algarve in Raposeira you drive about 45 minutes to Praia da Arrifana. This beach in Aljezur stretches 500 m in length and is located in a beautiful bay. Due to the top wave quality all year round, Arrifana is a popular surf spot. The spot consists of a right backbreak, which produces the "Kanagoo" wave in big swells. While you, as a beginner, can let off steam in the bay between the surrounding rocks that protect you from the wind and the foothills on the beach and learn to surf, professionals on the reef will show you what have it.
Praia da Ingrina und Praia da Zavial
Not only the west coast of the Algarve attracts surfers of different skill levels, but also the southern Algarve beach breaks such as Praia da Ingrina and Praia da Zavial. In Zavial there is a slightly more difficult right hand wave that works best at low tide. Both romantically secluded beaches are in close proximity to Surf Lodge Portugal and Surf Camp Algarve and can be easily reached on foot.
Iringa is a little-known spot for experienced surfers that offers a good alternative to busier surf spots when there are huge swells from the west. Zavial is a world class point break with steep, powerful and fast waves on the south coast of the Algarve. Due to its location, this surf spot needs south swell or big west swells and works best at low and mid tide. The subsoil is rock covered with sand. When there are big swells, the sand is sometimes washed out of the bay. Year-round from 3ft. – 16ft all surfing. This spot is suitable for experienced surfers.
Albufeira
Albufeira is the local beach of the holiday resort of the same name, which is particularly suitable for learning to surf in Portugal. On most days of the year, however, there is more swimming than surfing here. However, there are surfable waves at the beach break in strong southwest swells or south swells. The waves break left and right over coral reefs, rocky and sandy bottom, but come running into the bay with little power and rather short sections. Surfable at any tide and swell from 5ft - 9ft. The best travel time for the right conditions is October to February.
Beliche
The spot located near Sagres offers world-class waves in the Algarve and works from swells of just under 3ft. The beach break is suitable for experienced surfers as the waves break over shallow rock covered with sand. Sometimes very close to the beach. While this Portuguese surf spot allows for good snaps in barrels, it also requires confident surfing. Although crowded on holidays and weekends, this beach is also one of the most beautiful in the area. Left and right waves roll out up to 150 meters on a good day and run best at mid and high tide.
Carrapateira
At the southern end of the Algarve surf spots there is a point break that works best at low to mid tide. Various sandbars along the beach create several A-frame peaks, which work particularly well at mid-high tide. With 150 days a year with good conditions, the spot is one of the most consistent in the region. The mostly left waves come with power and can sometimes be very steep. Due to the open bay, there can be stronger currents, but the surf spot is suitable for all surf levels. Carrapateira sometimes runs at just under 3ft and holds powerful swells of up to 12ft.
Tonel
Tonel doesn't need to hide from the best surf spots in the world. With the right south swell direction or big west swell and north to north-west wind you will find fantastically fast, left and right waves that can form perfect tubes. However, the beach break also has a few tricky spots. So you have to pay attention to one or the other rock under the water surface and always surf confidently. During the week there are comparatively few people in the water. Due to the steep waves and currents more suitable for experienced surfers.
Costa da Caparica & Ericeira:
Costa da Caparica
The Costa da Caparica stretches about 30 kilometers south to Cabo de Espichel. In the northern part, the beach sections are separated from each other by small bays and there are numerous great rights and lefts. This spot is particularly good if you want to learn how to surf. But also advanced and professionals appreciate the proximity to Lisbon with its magnificent nightlife and international cuisine.
Praia da Ribeira d’Ilhas
Just 3.5 km from Ericeira is Praia da Ribeira d'Ilhas. This surf spot in Portugal is a long right hand reef break and is considered to have one of the best waves in Europe. Surf contests take place here every year, such as the "ASP World Tour Surf Campionship", where the best of the best compete. Especially advanced surfers get their money's worth here.
Baía dos Dois Irmãos
Baía dos Dois Irmãos, known as Coxos in the surfing community, is a pristine hidden stretch of beach in Ericeira surrounded by high cliffs. Coxos has one of the best waves in Portugal and Europe. In Coxos you will encounter an incredibly strong, right-hand wave that sometimes barrels. Only very experienced surfers should venture into the water here. This wave has top quality at low to medium tide.
Foz do Lizandro
There can be very strong barreling at Foz do Lizandro, but most of the time this is a relaxed beach for beginners and intermediate surfers. There are several peaks running both right and left, allowing every surfer to find the appropriate peak.
Furnas
Furnas beach is in the middle of town and only goes when there is a huge swell. The wave is only suitable for experienced surfers as it runs fast and dangerously alongside the rocks. Good tubes and thick lips can develop. This break is the last resort when the waves are too big for the other surf spots. This surf spot should only be visited by professionals.
Matadouro
Matadouro is just a little further north of Ericeira and is across from the skate park. There are several peaks, the main break being a right on the north side of the bay. There are a few lefts further south.
Sao Juliao
One of the largest sandy beaches south of Ericeira is Sao Juliao. The beach break has several peaks, lefts and rights. It is a swell magnet and therefore stable, even in summer. It is impressive that the wave runs in all swell directions and all tides. If the sandbars are in the right place, there can be really good waves even for experienced surfers.
Cave
The so-called Cave, also called Sete Bafos, is known for its barrels. It is Ericeira's most difficult wave and very dangerous as it breaks just in front of the rocks. This right reef break should only be viewed by true professionals or onlookers.
Figueira da Foz
The coastline between Porto and Lisbon stretches for 279 kilometers and is blessed with the best surf spots in Europe. The incredible waves can be visited in both summer and winter. Two places in particular stand out and you should definitely take a look at them:
Buarcos
A great surf beach, Buarcos has a right almost 1km long wave and delights many advanced surfers. This wave is considered to be one of the longest waves in Europe.
Cabedelo
At Figueira da Foz, the quay and beach break form excellent A-frame waves for intermediate surfers. Cabedelo is just ten minutes from Buarcos.
flight arrival
From our Puresurfcamps in Costa da Caparica, Figueira da Foz and Ericeira the closest airport is Lisbon and from those in the Algarve it is Faro. Faro and Lisbon are served by many airlines at reasonable rates. The main airlines are TAP Portugal and Transavia when it comes to surfing in Portugal. Here you can take longboards with you without any problems, but you pay €50 for up to 2 meters and €100 for longer than 2 meters, with a maximum weight of 32 kg. With the airline KLM, a boardbag is part of your luggage allowance, your board should not be longer than 3 meters and not heavier than 23 kg.
EASYJET also offers cheap flights with surfboards, for example a return flight costs €100 up to a maximum weight of 32 kg.
You need a passport or ID card to enter Portugal. These must not have expired for more than one year.
Bus, train, rental car
An arrival via Lisbon by rental car, bus or train, also to the Algarve, is possible and not very complicated. You can find the bus and train connections here.

We recommend hiring a car to be more flexible and to be able to see more of the country.

Rules of conduct when surfing:
First on the school desk, then on the board!
Every surfer started small! And you too will take your first surfing steps in a surf school. Only in a surf course do you learn theory and practice from a professional. Just listen carefully to the teacher and you will progress quickly. Because they know exactly what they're talking about.
The priorities in surfing
Oh yeah! Priorities must also be observed when surfing. The following applies: The surfer who is closest to the peak of the wave has priority Also, don't paddle around other surfers to "sneak" into priority. That's really bad behaviour and can cause big trouble.
Consequently: Wait, it goes in order. And when it's your turn, you can start! If everyone sticks to it, everyone gets a good wave. It also helps prevent accidents and collisions.
You and how many more...?
You should always keep an eye on how many other surfers are still in the water. If one of these has also eyed the wave you're aiming for, you'll have to wait. This is the basis for peaceful coexistence at the surf spot. Also, always make sure that you never choose the direct path through the line-up, but look for a suitable chanel to the line up. That way you don't disturb the others.
Respect first!
At the surf spot too, the highest commandment of cooperation is: respect - and this will be shown to you if you also show it to others! You should not only have respect for locals and other surfers who have traveled to the area, but also for the surf spot itself. In other words: the beach, the animals and plants. But above all towards the sea, because that has much more power than you. Therefore: Don't overestimate yourself and don't surf at a spot that doesn't correspond to your surfing level.
Everyone makes mistakes!
Nobody is perfect! As a result, even experienced surfers make mistakes when surfing. And that's just: human. No matter what you do wrong, the important thing is to apologize afterwards. In addition, experienced surfers should be considerate of inexperienced surfers and help each other when they need tips and help.
Safety while surfing
In order not to hurt yourself or other surfers, you should always try to keep the surfboard close to you. If you do fall, don't kick the board away with your legs. Nor should you jump headfirst into the water from your surfboard. When surfacing, you protect yourself more effectively by keeping your arms in front of and above your head. An unwritten law in surfing is also: where there is swimming, there is no surfing and vice versa.
General rules of conduct:
Language usage
The Portuguese don't like being spoken to in Spanish. English is therefore better, or of course Portuguese, but then if possible not Brazilian... When you say thank you, you say “obrigado” as a man and “obrigada” as a woman.
order coffee
Don't order an espresso if you want the typical Portuguese coffee, just say "bica/cafe" (it tastes much better than an espresso). The coffee with milk is called Galão in Portugal and also tastes really delicious.
tip
Basically, you don't have to leave a tip in Portugal.
Of course, everyone is happy about a little recognition and therefore a tip of 5-10% is appreciated. You simply leave the amount of money on the table after paying (rounding up like in Germany is not done here).
Wild camping
When it comes to wild camping with a camper or tent, there is no consensus, in some areas it is allowed, in others it is forbidden. It can happen that you are warned by the police or even expelled. While a bonfire on the beach is romantic, it's still best avoided.
Quiet & cleanliness
In terms of noise levels, most conflicts arise on the beach. Especially when the music is too loud. Empathy in combination with a constructive dialogue are suitable advisors for this. The issue of cleanliness comes up again and again. Just remember: you are a guest and considerate behavior is a matter of course for you! An example: you never leave the garbage, are always nice and let the others sleep at night. It's very easy.
Pets in the surf camps
If you want to take your dog or cat with you to surf in Portugal, you must have a pet passport and proof that the animal has been vaccinated against rabies. In our camps, dogs are only allowed in the Surf House Caparica, but they should know how to behave. Dogs are unfortunately not allowed in restaurants or shops in Portugal.

Puresurfcamps offers you the beautiful Surf Lodge Portugal in the Algarve with sea views from the sun terrace and the house! The surf lodge is located at the foot of a nature reserve, in almost untouched nature. Just a ten minute walk away are Ingrina and Zavial beach, which attract surfers on south swells. In the Algarve, Puresurfcamps mediates the Algarve surf camp, which is beautifully situated in a nature reserve, on the edge of the small, picturesque village of Raposeira, on a hill.
The surf camp has a pool and a cozy terrace surrounded by a cozy garden. Here you have the option of staying in comfortable wooden sheddies or in dorm or double rooms. There is an idyllic paddock right next to the facility. The horses are available for rides to the beach or into the beautiful hinterland. At the Beachfront Surf Camp Caparica, which is arranged by Puresurfcamps, you can easily and quickly get to your next surfing holiday in Portugal without having to travel long distances. The Beachfront Surfcamp Caparica is located in the immediate vicinity of the beach and has already attracted many surfing enthusiasts with its charm.

You can easily reach the surf spots in Caparica on foot or by longboard. The surf courses provided by the Eco Surf Lodge Caparica last five days and you can choose between 10 and 15 hours. Alternatively, there is surf guiding for all advanced surfers. All our surf guides are very familiar with the local conditions. They point out all special features and possible dangers. They are with you in the water and are on hand with tips and tricks.
Due to the proximity to the capital Lisbon, you can get on the bus and enjoy the day and night life in the party city of Lisbon. In the two central nightlife districts of Bairro Alto and Docas de Santo Amaro, a wide variety of bars and clubs are lined up next to each other. Bairro Alto is the center of Lisbon's hip hop, gothic and jazz scene. The Docas de Santo Amaro are renovated warehouses at the marina, just under the big suspension bridge. These attract with numerous different clubs, bars and pubs.

Portugal
Fishing village as surf mecca
Location:
Sagres is the westernmost town in the Algarve and is particularly popular with holidaymakers for its natural beauty.
Description:
The small, lively fishing village is characterized by a raging sea, huge cliffs and extensive, beautiful beaches.
Surfing:
Surfers who want to be on their surfboard all year round should visit Sagres, because surfing conditions are great here all year round.
Beaches:
It's almost impossible not to catch a wave in surfing mecca. Praia do Telheiro and Praia do Beliche are only suitable for professionals; With its reef break and high and low tide, Tonel offers ideal conditions for beginners.
Furthermore:
Outside of Sagres is Cabo de Sao Vicente, the westernmost point of mainland Europe, which can be reached by bike or hiked along challenging trails. In addition, deep sea fishing tours or a whale and dolphin tour can start from the picturesque harbor.

The eight-kilometer coastline appeals to every surfer. In the south, newcomers to surfing should be at Praia do Sul or Foz do Lizandro, the further north you go, the more the waves appeal to advanced and experienced surfers, such as at São Lourenço. The best waves of Portugal originate in Coxos.

Ericeira is a small, authentic place that, since 2011, is the only place in Europe that has been allowed to bear the designation "World Surfing Reserve".

There are now three well-recognized surf spots in the Porto region. At the popular beach of Matosinhos all surfer's tastes are served, the same applies to the area around Esmoriz. In Espinho, on the other hand, the “Junior Series of the World Surf League's” is held annually.

The southernmost point of the Algarve
Sagres, the southernmost point of the Algarve, is one of Portugal's surfing meccas. A large nature reserve and the small surf shops and surf schools in the towns give the area its character. On the way between Sagres and Lagos you will always find impressive viewpoints of the rocky cliffs and surf of the Algarve coast. One of the brightest lighthouses in the world stands at Cabo de São Vicente and in the small village of Villa do Bispo you can visit the oldest church in the Algarve, the Ermida Nossa Senhora de Guadalupe. Fishing village and tourist attraction
From Lisbon the closest surf spots are Costa da Caparica, Ericeira or Figueira da Foz. The Costa da Caparica is located in the Setubal region just opposite the city of Lisbon and can be reached through the Ponte 25 de Abril bridge. This former fishing village south of Lisbon has developed into a tourist attraction. The numerous fishing villages along the coast still offer an original impression with their small streets and colorful fishing boats. Extensive beaches with numerous washed-up shells and the beautiful promenade invite you to take a walk. From cafes and restaurants to shops and clubs, everything is there. In Costa da Caparica, our tip is to stop by Toni’s Tosta for a tasty snack between surfing. The numerous small beaches along the coast can be explored by taking the Transpraia. The open mini train runs between the Costa da Caparica and the Fonte da Telho terminus.
A surf sanctuary in Europe
North of Lisbon, just a stone's throw away, is one of the coolest surfing spots in Portugal - Ericeria. The sea and the coast, where high cliffs alternate with small sandy coves, the protection of natural Mediterranean habitats and the living culture of surfing make Ericeira a holiday destination visited by surfers from all over the world. The best waves are here mainly from September to May. Recognized as the first surfing sanctuary in Europe by the North American organization Save the Waves Coalition, Ericeira is eight kilometers long and includes beaches such as Ribeira de Ilias/Coxos, Furnas and Foz do Lizandro. The variety of waves allows different levels of difficulty and therefore offers excellent conditions for both professionals and beginners.
Besides having fun in and around the water, there are many attractions to visit in Ericeira. The small churches and chapels and the winding streets invite you to take a walk. And if you first settle down in one of the many cafés and restaurants, countless culinary highlights will tempt you. For example, you could try the grilled fish at Snack Bar America. You can also take small excursions in the area and visit the Aldeia Típica (a typical Portuguese village) or the monastery of Mafra. The nearby Tapada Nacional de Mafra (Green Area) is a leisure area where you can see fallow deer, roe deer, wild boar and other wild animals roaming freely.
At the mouth of the Mondego
Figueira da Foz is located in the Coimbra region and is just under 1.5 hours from Porto. Located at the mouth of the Mondego River, this town has extensive beaches of soft white sand that make for a relaxing holiday and some of the best waves for intermediate surfers in Portugal. Figueira da Foz also offers a wide range of shows, performances, bars and restaurants specializing in traditional Portuguese food. You should definitely try a bacalhau, Portuguese-style cod. The nightlife in Figueira da Foz seduces with its numerous bars, discotheques and promenades. Here you can extensively celebrate and enjoy the holiday evenings.

How does the first surf lesson in a portuguese surf camp look like if you are a beginner?
Surfing is considered the coolest sport in the world. Casual guys and beautiful women sit on the beach and suddenly run towards the sea. Then they disappear briefly and rise out of the waves like a phoenix. You rule the sea. But something that looks so simple and cool needs to be learned. This is where we come in. Our experienced surf instructors in Portugal will take you by the hand and first of all explain the basics of your board and the sea andhow waves are getting formed. It starts slowly: Put on your wetsuit, sit on the beach and listen first. In the next step, your surf instructor will warm up and stretch your body together with you.
Then it goes into the water for the first time. You'll stand there waist-high and the wind will whistle around your ears. You will feel it, the power of the waves. With a small paddle board you do your first exercises and find out how to get out to sea. One thing is certain, you will often fall into the water. Very often. But be just as sure: That's how everyone started once. Stay tuned! Maybe you will stand on a board for the first time on the second or third day and a wave will carry you. You'll think: Wow – that's freedom. You will definitely be proud of yourself this evening. Proud that you didn't give up. Don't worry if you need a little longer. With a "green wave" it doesn't occur to you that someone might have thrown a bucket of paint into the sea and you've mastered the take-off?
