Surf Camp Zarautz
"Surfing in the Basque Country" - that's a phrase you often hear in Zarautz! It not only stands for surfing, but for the all-round experience with tapas, sangria, fiesta, siesta and Basque culture. Zarautz is not one of the most popular travel destinations in recent years for nothing.
Surfcamp Zarautz offers the best of both worlds: a relaxed camp in green surroundings just a 5-minute walk from the sea.
The center of Zarautz is also not far away, where you will find everything you need for a relaxing holiday: from numerous shops to tapas bars, cafés, restaurants and a lively nightlife. The surf in Zarautz Bay is very suitable for both beginners and advanced surfers. Due to its location in the bay, you don't have to worry about currents and the waves roll in super!
The surf camp has its own bar, a kitchen and dining tent, chill-out areas, hammocks and a mini ramp. Half board is always included in the price. In the morning there is a rich breakfast buffet and in the evening a balanced dinner. The grill is also fired up once a week.
Located west of the world-famous city of San Sebastián, Zarautz is often seen as the little brother of "Sanse". And not for nothing, because just like San Sebastián, Zarautz offers great nightlife and culinary delights in the form of tapas bars and sidrerias.
Surfcamp Zarautz is located on a very comfortable campsite right near the beach and has a shop, WiFi and clean washhouses. The sea is only 500 m away, so you can check the waves in just a few minutes. You can also reach the city center after a short walk along the large boulevard. By the way, you will also pass the skate park.
In the center of Zarautz is the famous Pukas surf shop, trendy burger shops, traditional and modern tapas bars and numerous shops. You can also head to the numerous bars on the boulevard, which are open until the early hours. There are good parties especially on the weekends and the team will make sure you party in the right bars.
Sunset Hill
Every week the Surfcamp Zarautz team organizes a trip to Sunset Hill. The climb is worth it, because the mountain next to the campsite promises the best views: a magnificent view of Zarautz, Getaria, the rocks and the sea opens up - the perfect place for a photo session!
Boulevard & Cliff Jump
The boulevard begins where the path from the campsite to the beach ends, which takes you to the center of Zarautz. You can stop at one of the many bars, head to the skate park and then have an ice cream at one of the many ice cream parlors. Then it's on to the center, where you can shop or have a great meal. Fancy more action? Then you should go to the diving boards at the end of the boulevard and jump into the sea from a great height.
Culinary highlights
Basque cuisine is known all over the world and not without reason. The Surfcamp Zarautz team recommends going to a tapas bar at least once! You order a plate (plata) and choose different snacks from the bar or the kitchen. It is best to order a Rioja (red wine) with it.
Sidrerias
The sidrerias are famous, large restaurants where the cider is made in-house. You can try different varieties, often directly from the barrel. By the way, most people order the famous txuleta here, huge steaks, of which you can fill up in groups.
Camp Team Zarautz
The crew of the surf camp in Zarautz is always there for you! They ensure that the camp runs smoothly - from surf lessons to beach volleyball and from karaoke night to a good breakfast.

The large version of the popular wooden cabins! We have been testing the normal sheddies in our surf camps for a number of years now - and now you can also get the larger deluxe version!
Depending on your wishes, the Sheddies Deluxe can be equipped with a single or a double bed. There is also more storage space for luggage and boards. The ceiling height is sufficient for standing upright! So you can comfortably throw yourself into your neo in the Sheddie and go surfing.
The Sheddie Deluxe variant can accommodate up to 2 people.
No more air mattress for your vacation? Then the Sheddie is the ideal solution for you!
The cozy wooden cabins for two people are equipped with a mattress of 1.40m x 2.00m and offer enough space for clothes, suitcases and even surfboards. You can also put on your wetsuit in an upright position in the Sheddie, because there is enough space in the front part with a ceiling height of 2.00m to get dressed for the next surfing session.
The comfortable and spacious 4-person tents at Surf Camp Zarautz have 2 tent cabins for 2 people each. You can always book a tent cabin for double or single occupancy. The second cabin is then occupied by other guests.
The 4-person tents always consist of an awning and a main tent. In the main tent there are 2 sleeping cabins for 2 people each. The front half of the tent, which is also equipped with a groundsheet, serves as a luggage compartment. Please bring your own air mattress, sleeping bag and pillow.
You can choose between two beginner surf courses:
Surfing is fun - but it's a lot more fun when you know what you're doing! That's why the surfing team at Surfcamp Zarautz offers top lessons with certified and experienced surfing instructors. The surf instructor crew has undergone intensive training and you can be sure that you are learning from responsible surfers.
The surf instructors not only teach you practically, but also give you theoretical insights into how waves are formed, the sea, the beach and the equipment. A surf session lasts 1.5 hours. You can also surf the material for free at any time.
Lessons take place in small groups of up to 8 people. Only soft tops (surfboards with a soft foam surface) are used. All surf instructors are beach lifeguards and have an ISA Surf Instructor 1 diploma. The ISA certification is recognized worldwide, so you can be sure that security is a top priority here.
The groups are divided by level: beginner or advanced. The beginner course is for those who have never surfed before. The intermediate surf course is suitable if you have already gained some experience, such as a week-long surf camp with lessons.
Even as an advanced surfer you can choose between two surf courses:
The Intermediate course is perfect for surfers who have mastered the basics. For example, if you've already taken a surfing course and you know how to use the pop-up, then you've come to the right place. In this course you push your surf level to the next level.
The surf instructors at Surf Camp Zarautz go into the water with you to give you direct feedback and help you catch the right waves. Technique is given more attention here than general theory. The aim is that after this course you can also go surfing on your own.
Surfing is much more fun when you know exactly what you are doing. You are also better protected from the dangers that the surf and the sea bring with them.
Every surf beginner should definitely attend a course. The following key facts are to be known about the course:
Surf Team Zarautz
The motivated team consists of certified surf coaches with many years of experience. All instructors are trained Beach Lifeguards and have an ISA Surf Instructor 1 diploma. This diploma is recognized worldwide. The surf coaches are passionate surfers themselves, they are open to questions and will be happy to help you with tips and advice.

Do you already have experience and/or do you not need further surf lessons? Then you can rent surfing equipment for the whole week and use all boards unlimitedly!
The Surfcamp Zarautz team offers various boards, mostly soft tops in different sizes and shapes, but also some hard tops. There are also wetsuits in all sizes and some body and skim boards.
The rental starts on Sunday and lasts until Saturday. A theory/instruction is held prior to the rental to ensure you know all the rules and are safe in the water.
Zarautz
Zarautz is a wonderful place for surfing. The bay surrounded by the hilly landscape offers a wonderful view while surfing. The waves are usually not very big and therefore ideal for learning to surf and longboarding. You have 2 different spots at your disposal - one right in front of the campsite: this spot is the closest and perfect to start surfing. There is also a little further, behind the swimming area, a spot that is also good for surfing: the locals often surf here and the waves are a bit bigger than at the campsite.
Playa Gris
About five minutes by car from Zarautz is the world-famous resort of Playa Gris. This spot has become known as a real big wave spot. Big waves come in here in winter. In summer, non-big wave surfers can also have fun here. The spot gets more swell than Zarautz and therefore the waves are a bit bigger on average. By the way, from Playa Gris you can also see the famous Big Wave Pointbreak Roka-Puta.
San Sebastion (Zurriola)
Fifteen minutes from Zarautz is the tapas capital of the Basque Country: San Sebastián. Apart from good food, drinks and shopping, you can also surf very well here! Last but not least, Zurriola beach has become a well known place in Spain because of its good waves. There is also a bit more swell here, so you have a chance of catching slightly larger waves than in Zarautz. But beginners can also go surfing here.
During your holiday in Zarautz you have the opportunity to take two city trips with you. The first goes to San Sebastián, the second to Bilbao. So you can go on vacation while on vacation.
The tapas capital of Spain is a must! San Sebastián is known for delicious food and drink, but also for the cozy Spanish atmosphere. Explore the old and new parts of the city together with the crew and be enchanted by their beauty.
In the old part you can eat tapas and pintxos, while in the new part you can shop to your heart's content. The best place to watch the sunset is from the cliff overlooking picturesque San Sebastián Bay. The day ends with a social party.
The second week trip goes to Bilbao. This beautiful city is perfect for shoppers and surfers. There is a wide variety of shops with something for everyone. From surf shops to well-known clothing brands you will find everything. In addition, Bilbao awaits you with one of the most architecturally significant buildings - the famous Guggenheim Museum.
You don't even have to go inside to enjoy the art. The building itself is a true marvel of form and material. There are also many works of art around it that you can visit for free. Discover the most beautiful places in the city together with the crew of Surfcamp Zarautz and let yourself be enchanted by the beauty of Bilbao.
If you want to surf, you can get ahead with yoga. Yoga helps enormously to achieve good balance, build strength and loosen muscles after a hard surfing session. In addition, it is also very relaxing.
A yoga session is already included in your package price. If you get a taste for it, you can book more lessons with the yoga teachers at the surf camp.
During the early morning session you can enjoy the beautiful sunrise. The second session is then more focused on relaxing the muscles - ideal for getting back on the board the next day relaxed. There is also a sunset yoga session. Here the focus is not only on stretching and balance, but also on relaxation and enjoying the beautiful surroundings.
The mini ramp is in the middle of the Zarautz surf camp! The halfpipe is approx. 1.50 m high and a good 4 m wide. Perfect for improving your skills or practicing your first drop-in.
Don't have your own skateboard? No problem, there are some on site!
Don't you have any skating experience? No problem, the Surfcamp Zarautz crew will teach you. So ask for tips and tricks before you get started.
Zarautz is best discovered with a longboard! Cruising down the boulevard and into town. There are free longboards for hire at the surf camp. Simply enter your name and you will be handed a longboard.
It's best to start on flat trails before heading down a hill. You can also pick up tricks and tips for longboarding from the Surfcamp Zarautz crew.
Every week the surf camp team organizes the big beach volleyball tournament on Zarautz beach. In a team of 5 to 6 people you can compete against the other camp guests. So don't miss to register and win prizes. If volleyball isn't your cup of tea, stop by and cheer on your team to victory!
In Zarautz, the team and guests usually end the day with a chilled party. You start at the bar in the camp and after that you continue towards Kupela. There is always a DJ there to give you a long night of partying with the best beats. The Surfcamp Zarautz team is always up for a good party and up for a dance. Every Friday you close the week with a theme party. From pirates and hippies to 80ies and spooky costumes, all themes are covered! The bar is decorated according to the theme and off you go.
There's always something going on at Surf Camp Zarautz - whether you're proving your knowledge in the interactive (surf) quiz, screaming your heart out at the karaoke night or competing against one another in the beach games.
You can also borrow various sports equipment and games at the camp: there are longboards and skateboards, kubbs, footballs and frisbees. Incidentally, the items can be used free of charge.
